Three Years Later

Laughter bubbled from my gut at Annedale. “Okay, love, it’s your Bumpy.”

She couldn’t say Humpty yet and called her egg plushy Bumpy. It was the sweetest word that had ever caressed my ears. My lips pressed gently against her forehead, as I knew my time with her for today was over. I still had the ledgers of the cities and villages to go over, not to mention the bill that I needed to submit hopefully this year so that all hybrids were privileged just as the other races.

The vampire hybrids needed access to the feeding centers, and the djinns and witches’ hybrids need training with their magic. They grew up dangerous if nobody guided them into their magic, showing them what it was they could do.

The door to the throne room opened, and Saffier walked in. “Your highness, your father is asking for you.”

“I’ll visit with him when I’m done, Saffier.”

He bowed, and Monique strolled after him with her handmaiden Viola. The woman was practically raising my daughter as her mother had duties as queen that took up most of her day. Monique was almost as busy as I was with making sure that everything in my kingdom ran smoothly.

Viola was a beautiful woman. She had a golden brown skin that almost glittered in the light. She had a little boy of her own, a hybrid too, I believe. His father was a witch, and when he discovered she was pregnant, he wanted nothing to do with the fetus. Monique took pity on her and begged me to have mercy and let them become part of our court. This boy could be the missing link one day in uniting what I planned for the hybrids.

So I let Viola stay with her son Edward Charles.

“Come, princess.” Viola smiled as she took Annedale and Bumpy from my lap. Monique brushed her cheek softly at Viola’s passing. The girl looked nothing like my wife, and I knew it couldn’t be easy for Monique, knowing that she was the odd one out. What could I say? My genes were strong.

“She is growing up way too fast,” Monique said as she came to a stop in front of me. She looked pretty today, wearing a two-piece suit. White suited her. I could never keep the color clean.

“She is still small, Monique. There’s still a long time before someone comes and begs for her hand.”

“That will be the day,” Monique muttered, which brought a smile to my lips.

“Just remember, a lot of things can change in the next twenty years. Maybe she won’t want to get married, or want to marry a boy.”

“Hold your tongue, Theo. We have enough to worry about. Especially the witches.”

“We did nothing wrong. That was my father, Monique. I run this court differently. But times are changing, love, and I know you only meant that comment as a joke. In today’s era, we can’t be controlling, not even with Annedale. We can’t look down on others. Our daughter could easily stand on the other side with the protesters twenty years from now.
